Next Board Meeting

The next MHHA Board meeting will take place on November 16, 2011 at 7738 MHC. Residents are encouraged to attend.

  • Earthquake Preparedness

The Board is aware that several homes sustained damage following the earthquake on August 23rd. We are also aware that not all of these homes are covered by earthquake insurance. One affected resident has asked that the Board attempt to identify affected parties to see if there is interest in joint contract work (i.e., a group contract rate). To that end, please email Kasanda if you are interested in connecting with other affected homeowners, making sure to indicate what type of damage occurred (e.g. exterior structural, drywall, cracks in brick, etc.). In addition, please let us know if you have damage so that we have a record of how many units in the community were affected.  ProCAM has forwarded the companies below for disaster assistance:

    ·         Belfor Property Restoration at 703-450-3900

    ·         Purofirst of Metropolitan at 1-800-500-2399

    ·         Servpro at 703-537-8800

Also note that contractors recommended by your neighbors are listed here. You can also contact the local American Red Cross for helpful information on dealing with disasters.  Below for your reference is an earthquake safety checklist.  Again, if you have sustained damage, please let us know by calling 703-536-5200 or sending an email to Kasanda.Chisambisha@procamva.com.

  • Rules and Regulations Updated

The Rules and Regulations were updated in July 2011. You can find the latest copy on the Rules page.

  • Number Plaques

For those of you who have not obtained your new Number Plaque for the front of your house, please contact Management. The cost is $34.91. You are responsible for installation.

  • Traffic Calming Update

We continue to await the installation the traffic calming measures on Dominion Way. According to Fairfax County, the work is out for estimate and they expect installation will occur in the second week of September.

A copy of the Traffic Calming image sent in a recent email can be found here: Traffic Calming Proposal.

  • Marshall High School Construction

Marshall High School expansion is beginning and we expect some impact on our community. You can find out more information from the following Web site:

    http://www.fcps.edu/marshallhs/aboutgcm/renovations/

  • Home Based Businesses

It has recently been reported that some residents may be running a day-care service out of the home.  We wanted to take this opportunity to remind all residents that Article VI, Section 1 (f) has the following provision regarding running a business:

No trade or business of any kind shall be advertised from or transacted on any Lot, other than those authorized by the Code of Fairfax County, Virginia and applicable zoning ordinances, and approved by the Board of Directors.

The Association seeks to protect and promote the residential character of the community.  Simultaneously, the Board recognizes that some forms of home offices and businesses are not inconsistent with the residential nature of the community.  The purpose of this reminder is to ensure residents aware that approval must be granted by the Board of Directors, before establishing a home business.

If the Association finds that a unit owner/resident is running a business out of the home without Board consent or applicable county permits, the unit owner will be subject to violation assessments.  If you are thinking about starting a home based business, please check with management first, and get the necessary approval.  If you notice business activity from a unit, please contact management at 703-536-5200 or via email: Kasanda.Chisambisha@procamva.com. Thank you in advance for your attention and cooperation.

  • Community Expansion - Carrhomes LLC Development

Clearing of the construction site for the new homes being developed by Carrhomes is underway. The sewer and water line installation is scheduled to start the week of August 22nd, 2011. To facilitate repairs, it will be necessary for the utility company to block off the unassigned/visitor parking spaces at the end of Hutchison Grove Court and adjacent travel way. The work is projected to take approximately 12-15 days (weather permitting). Please be advised that the visitor spaces at the end of Hutchison Grove Court will be blocked off and unavailable, while the work is conducted; please plan accordingly and park along Dominion Way while the spaces are blocked off. There will be a trench that will be backfilled or covered with metal plates at the end of each day.

For those interested in information about the property provided by the developer, see the following:

  • New Paint Colors

The new paint policy and color swatches are now on the Paint Policy page.

  • Snow and the State Managed Roads

State road update: George C Marshall Drive, Dominion Way, and Dominion Drive are state-owned roads and the state is responsible for plowing them. (Note that private plowing is actually restricted.) Residents can call VDOT at 703-383-VDOT or e-mail them at novainfo@vdot.virginia.gov with the location of problem streets. VDOT will also accept photos of streets via email as visual support for roads that need attention.

You can also find helpful tips on the County webpage: www.fairfaxcounty.gov/emergency/prepare/winter. We are sharing this information because more contact will probably generate a better response.

Volunteer Opportunities

Are you looking for ways to volunteer your time for the Marshall Heights community? There are several opportunities available, including both long-term and short-term commitments. Please help us continue to improve the quality of our community by volunteering some of your time.

MHHA Board Member
We have an opening on the board and we are looking for someone like you to join. The Board meets a minimum of every other month, with occasional monthly meetings as necessary. Meetings last approximately 2 hours each. Between meetings, board members can expect to spend 2-8 hours per month on community-related activities including contract and budget review, resident communications, management oversight, vendor meetings, email discussion, and similar tasks.

ARC Participation
The Architectural Review Committee (ARC) is responsible for the overall appearance of the community and helps homeowners improve their properties while maintaining consistency and quality throughout the neighborhood. You can read more about the ARC on the ARC overview page. The ARC is currently looking for additional members to round out the team. ARC members perform inspections of homes for sale using easy-to-use, detailed guides. They also propose changes in community standards and help perform annual inspections.

Community Newsletter Editor
Do you have a desire to express your creativity while providing news to your neighbors? Let's revive the Community Newsletter! It's a great opportunity to support the community and it can be managed on your schedule. The Board is open to any and all ideas regarding a recurring newsletter, which can be traditional print, Web-based, or both! Our Webmaster can help with the technology for an online edition. What we need is someone who can collect information and stories interesting to the community and coordinate the production.

New Owner Greetings
Nearly every month, new neighbors join our community and they deserve a nice welcome. Help us put together a new owner kit and personally welcome our new neighbors to Marshall Heights. This volunteer opportunity is perfect for someone with limited time, but a welcoming spirit.

Ad Hoc Trash Pickup
Trash is a reality, but it doesn't have to overwhelm our community. The wind sometimes blows down trash cans or brings trash floating in from surrounding areas. This is an excellent opportunity for anyone who wants to grab some exercise, enjoy the outdoors, and... well... pick up a little trash along the way. It's all about keeping our community looking tip-top and feeling good about it. Volunteers of ad hoc trash pickup announce and organize events such as "community clean-up days" or recurring walking tours of the community (with a bag of course!).

If you’re interested in any community volunteer activities, please contact Kasanda Chisambisha at ProCam (703) 536-5200 or email ProCAM@ProCAMlink.com. Alternatively, send an email to the board at board@mhha.net.
